In the earliest days of the concept of psychopathy, Hervey Cleckley wrote his influential ‘The Mask of Sanity’. Cleckley’s description of the psychopath focussed on an inability to experience deep emotions “particularly love and compassion”. Already, it seems, there were links to narcissism.
